jan 2015 obigants

And I am so grateful for your support. We are on the eve of Spring: the equinox is tomorrow. Winter vanished. Since I last wrote to you, we have pruned Guman (in what felt like mid-winter, more on that separately) and bottled wine (more on that below), and I have visited friends and colleagues around the Country, spreading the word.

We bottled four precocious wines from 2014, and a slow-maturing wine from 2013. All are excellent and exciting. Each one is a nearly classical version of a wine that we have made several times before. There is something remarkable and deeply rewarding about making the same wines, from the same vineyards, for a few years—and improving them. We are honing our craft.

I am writing to let you know that we are about to charge you for the second OBLIGANTS selection of the year, and the first and only shipment from this bottling. By April 1, we will complete a second bottling of Blowout—not a repeat of the first wine, but a new wine. We made provisions before we bottled the first wine to produce a Rosé if the white Blowout was successful. And it was: we sold out in less than a month; and it has been the fastest selling wine that we have ever made. The gamble paid off. So we are now carbonating a 2014 Rosé; delicately stained with Cinsault. We have decided to include a bottle in your Obligants shipment—if only to make sure that you get a bottle. We have only saved enough wine for 80 cases of wine. The first bottles will go to you. We will ship your wine as soon as complete the bottling of the Blowout Rosé.

Here is a list of all of the wines in your shipment, with some notes on what is in the wines and when to drink them. And here are the wines (and the olive oil!) in the full release that we are making to the rest of the mailing list. If you want to order any additional bottles, you may do so here—and at your special Obligants discount.

Please do not hesitate to write me or Brenna if you have any special requests or concern. You know that Brenna does not sleep until she knows that every bottle is in your hands, that every request has been satisfied.

And come see us sometime.
